Identify the main ideas and synthesize and draw logical inferences from the document.Read and demonstrate understanding of a complex document. The first four lessons require students to read excerpts from the speech "like a detective." Through summary organizers, practice, and discussion, they will master the technique of identifying key words, creating summaries of document sections and, as an assessment in the final lesson, writing an argumentative essay. Over the course of five lessons, students will read, analyze, and gain a clear understanding of "I Have a Dream," a speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr., at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. Through a step-by-step process, students will acquire the skills to analyze and assess primary source material. These units were developed to enable students to understand, summarize, and analyze original texts of historical significance. This unit is part of the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s Teaching Literacy through History resources, designed to align to the Common Core State Standards.
